A very local island with a 'tourist' industry of a sort
Cool places to explore for a couple of days
Easy to get there on a ferry and not expensive
Worth exploring for a few days and there are boats to Thailand
7 Wells waterfall + the trail from there up to Gunung Mat Chinchang (a sharp peak) - look out for the beautiful emerald pool on the way up, only a short distance above 7 Wells - look for the alternative path to your right as you walk through the jungle
Gunung Raya - the highest peak on Langkawi - you can walk up a jungle trail or cycle on a road
Tanjung Rhu beach - beautiful beach with a roadside fish and chip restaurant just before you get there
The touristy (low-key) area around Tengah and Chenang beaches
Georgetown - food
It’s worth riding around the island, but not particularly amazing
Riding up Penang Hill is possible - but steep (30% max)
There’s a very cool path up Penang Hill which is much more fun than the train
Perhentian Besar (big island) is a good base
Perhentian Kecil (small island) is more lively, with more tourists
These islands are just amazing, a real highlight of Malaysia
Friends who visited 30 years ago say very little has changed since then and Perhentian Besar in particular feels very undeveloped
There is a walk across the island that's interesting
We love just climbing around the coast, you can actually get everywhere by climbing on the rocks
Favourite beach is the absolutely beautiful Romantic Beach and the adjacent Turtle Beach
Most of the island is great for snorkelling, although the area down near 'Shark Point' is especially good
Surfy place, backpacker vibe
The island is very close to the coast
You get day trippers who come at the weekend and on Friday, but when they leave in the late afternoon, the place is beautiful again
A bigger place with lots to see
The far coastline is wilder with waves and fewer people
a smaller island with a great sheltered coast
This is a beautiful little island off the coast of Sabah
The island feels very isolated and there are still traditional fishing villages that you can wander around
There's a lovely place to stay in just away from what constitutes the main village called 'Green House lodge'. The owners are so nice, and it is a special experience to stay there.
