We've cycled around a lot of Malaysia, sometimes in full touring mode, other times using a minimal bike-packing style on light road bikes. You can see our cycled roads in the graphic, courtesy of VeloViewer.
If all you did was cycle, you'd be hot, tired and not see the best of Malaysia, so these routes just give you a rough idea of the number of cycling days as long as you're able to do 70-100km a day and sometimes a bit more if necessary.Â
You'll almost always be hot, but starting early, hats, stopping in deep shade and filling up with ice, all work wonders.Â
Unless it's Ramadan you'll never struggle to find food and even then you can survive on Gas Station food, or any of the convenience stores such as 7-11 / emart24 / 99 Speedmart / CU / My News / TMG Mart. Our favourite is emart24, a new Korean brand with cafĂ© style seating.Â
Guest houses or Homestays have a wide range of costs from about RM40 up to RM300, and they will all offer about the same standard despite the difference in price.
Campsites are often quite easy to find and are nearly always close to rivers. They often have tarps or shelters to cover your tent. Typical costs are RM10-20
The Grand Tour (14 days of Cycling*)
This is an excellent way to see Malaysia, you can break it up, visit Kapas, Lang Tengah Island or even Redang while travelling up the East coast. The ride across through Royal Belum National Park might also be worth a couple of extra days going into the jungle by boat. Riding back you could visit Langkawi or Penang, or both and also spend a day doing rafting in Gopeng. On the way across the country in the South you could also detour into Taman Negara and visit Gunung Senyum. So many options!
Exploring interesting places (7 days of cycling*)
I rode this on a road bike, doing about 200km a day where necessary. It would be easy to break it down and do shorter sections.
The East Coast Islands (10 days of cycling)
Tour de Kinabalu (7 days of cycling)
This was also done on a road bike and some of the roads were so steep it was unbelievable. Highways with gradients of 25% shouldn't exist.
Malaysian Microadventure (7 days of cycling*)
I did this on a road bike in 4 days - we had a long weekend. I did it during Ramadan, which was a mistake because there was no food anywhere apart from in Chinese villages.
Tour around the Highlands (10 days of cycling*)
I did this on a road bike in 5 days, but that was roughly 200km a day.
Singapore to Kuala Lumpur (7 days of cycling*)
We did this using the ferry from Singapore to Eastern Malaysia. If this starts again, it's a brilliant way to enter and leave Singapore. Since Covid it has been stopped but the border posts still exist so maybe it will open again.
