Hornstrandir, Myvatn, Landmannalaugar (2011)
We originally went to Iceland with the intention of walking across the country but were met by unseasonably cold weather, the worst for 90 years. This closed all the highland roads for June and most of July. Our plans to get food dropped off for us along the seasonal tracks were thwarted by an impassible combination of permafrost and meltwater. We were left looking for the best accessible alternatives, and initially headed up to the North-West and Hornstrandir, From there we moved to the area around Myvatn, hoping that the weather would improve, and we would get access to the highlands. Unfortunately, the weather just got worse, so we decided to go to the South coast and try part of our original route from Skogar up to Thorsmork and then onto Landmannalaugar until we ran out of time.
